What is Europe going to do to keep up with global innovations in higher education? Macron’s 2017 vision for European universities was about competing with MIT and Stanford, but in 2024 we should really be thinking about challenges from Tsinghua and Fudan (China), Jawaharlal Nehru (India), King Saud (Saudi Arabia) and São Paulo (Brazil). How are European universities going to attract the best and brightest students and to offer them an education fit for the 2030s and beyond? How are universities going to enable their researchers to become global leaders in their field, to spin-off companies and then keep them in Europe? How will European governments and the EU facilitate the changes needed?Next year the European Commission will propose a new Multiannual Financial Framework post-2027. Will this be a hold steady approach (no new money or programmes, no new own resources etc), or will it be a radical, new, dynamic approach to confront the challenges we face?As M. Barnier would often tell us, “the clock is ticking!” https://lnkd.in/enEA9jkk

It was great to be invited to this event at the Evening Standard and their Step Up initiative - such a broad range of organisations to hear from and also share Birkbeck, University of London perspective in this discussion. I think it just goes to show that no year is the same in our world of work and that considerable external factors, such as cost of living, can put a real dent in our efforts but never deter us. Need more open conversations where we share honest reflections as to how things are right now in the world of access, where there is no one reason for what impacts access and no one solution. https://lnkd.in/e4uV_qJr

I enjoyed being interviewed for this Forbes article by Robert Farrington on pursuing a bachelor's degree on an accelerated timeline -- say, three years instead of four. My overall take -- it's worth considering but there are downsides to be mindful of.I'll post more about all my thoughts -- the quotes that appear in the story had to do with financial aid, academic planning, and the course schedule. One upshot here - if you work at a university, there are real steps you can take to ease quicker completion and reduce tradeoffs that your students may face. Co|Here Campus and Workplace can help you plan and execute some high-payoff interventions. The pic has...nothing to do with the article. But, how often do you see a double rainbow across the sky in the Alps? I was in Germany for work, though, for the VS America higher ed confab. So, picture validated!Article link below.#students #highered #studentdebt

What Would It Take? In the new #Outlook2030 Brief: U.S. and International Education, Allan Goodman and Mirka Martel, Ph.D., map key trends in academic mobility to the United States. They compare annual findings to 2030 projections and offer suggestions for campus planning to accommodate the anticipated growth in international students. Drawing on comparable data from the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange and new insights from the field, this brief effectively lays out what is being done currently to promote international student growth and current and future ingredients for success to further expand student mobility. WonkHE consistently provide thought-provoking and informative articles. One recently written by Jim Dickinson spoke very clearly to us and our belief that all universities would benefit from a bit more transparency and consistency when looking to draw comparisons against other institutions. A shared understanding of what universities spend money on is imperative to confidently debate the cost and value UK HE offers.https://lnkd.in/eJN8ymaG?

When you see these search results related to INDUSTRY 5.0 you will consider the University of East London must play an important role in the new global ecosystem represented by INDUSTRY 5.0. Unfortunately, this is not true. The university ignores INDUSTRY 5.0 principles and uses the term just as a click-byte for new students, professors, and associated staff and of course for investors.
