What is Europe going to do to keep up with global innovations in higher education? Macron’s 2017 vision for European universities was about competing with MIT and Stanford, but in 2024 we should really be thinking about challenges from Tsinghua and Fudan (China), Jawaharlal Nehru (India), King Saud (Saudi Arabia) and São Paulo (Brazil).How are European universities going to attract the best and brightest students and to offer them an education fit for the 2030s and beyond? How are universities going to enable their researchers to become global leaders in their field, to spin-off companies and then keep them in Europe? How will European governments and the EU facilitate the changes needed?Next year the European Commission will propose a new Multiannual Financial Framework post-2027. Will this be a hold steady approach (no new money or programmes, no new own resources etc), or will it be a radical, new, dynamic approach to confront the challenges we face?As M. It was great to be invited to this event at the Evening Standard and their Step Up initiative - such a broad range of organisations to hear from and also share Birkbeck, University of London perspective in this discussion. I think it just goes to show that no year is the same in our world of work and that considerable external factors, such as cost of living, can put a real dent in our efforts but never deter us. Need more open conversations where we share honest reflections as to how things are right now in the world of access, where there is no one reason for what impacts access and no one solution. https://lnkd.in/e4uV_qJr

I enjoyed being interviewed for this Forbes article by Robert Farrington on pursuing a bachelor's degree on an accelerated timeline -- say, three years instead of four. My overall take -- it's worth considering but there are downsides to be mindful of.I'll post more about all my thoughts -- the quotes that appear in the story had to do with financial aid, academic planning, and the course schedule. One upshot here - if you work at a university, there are real steps you can take to ease quicker completion and reduce tradeoffs that your students may face.
